Addition of a few crystals of MnSO4 greatly accelerates the reduction by oxalic acid of purple permanganate to the nearly colorless manganese(II). When no manganese(II) ion is added, the reaction initially proceeds slowly, but the rate gradually increases because the product autocatalyzes the reaction.

Oxalic acid is corrosive to tissue. When ingested, oxalic acid removes calcium from the blood. Kidney damage can be expected as the calcium is removed from the blood in the form of calcium oxalate. The calcium oxalate then obstructs the kidney tubules.
