How do we know that the oxidation states have changed here? ... Oxidation reaction can be separated in space from the reduction reaction, if there is a way for the electrons and ions to be exchanged:

Half reactions are either an oxidation or a reduction. Only the species of atom that is involved in a change is in a half reaction. In the above reaction, silver goes from plus one to zero oxidation state, but to account for everything, the electrons must be placed into the half reaction.

Reduction and oxidation always occur together. If one thing is reduced, another thing is oxidized. The reactant that is reduced is called the oxidizing agent and accepts electrons. The reactant that is oxidized is called the reducing agent and supplies electrons.
