pH is a measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution. It is defined as the cologarithm of the activity of dissolved hydrogen ions (H + ). Hydrogen ion activity coefficients cannot be measured e...

The acidity (or basicity) of a solution is measured using the pH scale. The pH scale corresponds to the concentration of hydronium ions in a solution. In fact, if you take the exponent of the H3O+ concentration and remove the negative sign, you have the pH of a solution.

The pH scale is logarithmic and as a result, each whole pH value below 7 is ten times more acidic than the next higher value. ... For example, pH 4 is ten times more acidic than pH 5 and 100 times (10 times 10) more acidic than pH 6. The same holds true for pH values above 7, each of which is ten times more alkaline...

What does pH mean? ... Because the pH scale is logarithmic, a difference of one pH unit represents a tenfold, or ten times change. For example, the acidity of a sample with a pH of 5 is ten times greater than that of a sample with a pH of 6. A difference of 2 units, from 6 to 4, would mean that the acidity is one hundred...

Acids and Bases:An Introduction - This module provides an intrioduction to acid and base chemistry. ... by Anthony Carpi, Ph.D. ... The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. Substances with a pH between 0 and less than 7 are acids (pH and [H+] are inversely related - lower pH means higher [H+]). Substances with a pH greater than 7 and...
