Page Layout ... It sounds more like you have a corrupt page file (or swap file as it was called under 98se. Ideally your best bet is to delete the old page file and reboot. In 98 this was as easy as booting to command line and deleting the file c:\win386.swp;

I deleted the partitions then created again before installing winXp and now the unit letters are correct: first HDD partition (C),second (d) and cd rom (D). Just this last time I got the BSOD with the Stop 0x50 PAGE_FAULT... error, which Technet says is either a driver or memory problem. Now the memory is new, in fact, I have three memory sticks to play with (the one that I am going to return RMA that did not have the bit errors).
