After World War II, geologists developed the paleomagnetic dating technique to measure the movements of the magnetic north pole over geologic time. In the early to mid 1960s, Dr. Robert Dubois introduced this new absolute dating technique to archaeology as archaeomagnetic dating.

A little off-topic, but interesting: Chris Rowan writes about paleomagnetic reversals and crustal movements some billion years ago. ... The change in inclinations through the section indicates that North America moved almost 30 degrees - around 3000 kilometres - southward in just 11 million years of volcanic activity.

Few cores are oriented during drilling, but fortunately most can be re-oriented subsequently by the paleomagnetic method. This uses the remanent magnetism of the rock to define North. The horizontal component, JH, of the mean paleomagnetic vector, JT,in a run of core defines the direction of North within that run.
