Alert me to new issues of the journal ... The Palisades Sill was studied chemically and petrographically in order to elucidate its differentiation mechanism. Neutron activation analysis was performed on 53 whole rock samples from a 342-m thick section located near the George Washington bridge.

Diabase is commonly thought to have a simple ophitic texture, but careful study of the Palisades Sill, New Jersey, indicates that this diabase has a complicated texture that reflects the processes responsible for the differentiation of the sill.

We illustrate the methods using four non-parallel thin-sections from a sample of diabase 146 m above the base of the 300-m thick Palisades sill of New Jersey. Compaction of crystal mush in this sill has previously been postulated on the basis of chemical evidence.
