Yes, you should put on the parking brake, because the parking pawl (the piece inside the transmission that holds the car in park) can break or become dislodged and the car will roll away. It happens rarely, but it does happen.

seems the parking pawl broke in the trans. adjusted the linkage, hoped, prayed, and even thought about vodo, but park will not lock up..... ... I don't think you'd have trouble fixing the parking pawl without removal of the trans. It is also possible that some use will improve the general functions of the transmission.
