The confusion resulted from the various color phases of each parrotfish. Bonnaterre originally named this parrotfish Scarus viridis in 1788. He renamed it Sparisoma viride later that year. The genus name is derived from the Latin "sparus" = a fish with a golden head and the Greek "soma" = body.
