Active and Passive Sonar; Scientists use two general types of sonar—active and passive. Active sonar transducers emit an acoustic signal or pulse of sound into the water. If an object is in the path of the sound pulse, the sound bounces off the object and returns an “echo” to the sonar transducer.

A passive sonar array can determine both the range and bearing relative to an acoustic source. The time delay on arrival (TDOA) from each pair of hydrophones determines a hyperbola along which the source point lies.
