PASSIVE TRANSPORT - TAKING THE EASY ROAD ... While active transport requires energy and work, passive transport does not. There are several different types of this easy movement of molecules. It could be as simple as molecules moving freely such as osmosis or diffusion.

Passive Transport; Passive transport is the diffusion of substances across a membrane. As we stated above, this is a spontaneous process and cellular energy is not expended. Molecules will move from where the substance is more concentrated to where it is less concentrated.

All molecules and ions are in constant motion and it is the energy of motion - kinetic energy - that drives passive transport. Transport of uncharged species across a membrane is dictated by differences in concentration of that species across the membrane - that is, by the prevailing concentration gradient.

Passive Transport Versus Active Transport ... Passive transport involves carriers, channels, or direct diffusion through a membrane. This type of transport always operates from regions of greater concentration to regions of lesser concentration. No external source of energy is required.

Solutes cross cell membranes by passive or active transport. If uncharged solutes are small enough, they can move As indicated, passive transport, in the same direction as a concentration gradient, occurs spontaneously, whereas transport against a concentration gradient (active transport) requires an input of energy.

There are two general types of transporters: Passive transporters, which use no energy, and active transporters that generally employ ; ATP to drive transport. One example of each will be discussed.
