In a Penning trap charged particels (ions) can be stored with a superposition of a magnetic field and a static electric field. The magnetic field prevent the charged particel to escape perpendicular to the magnetic field lines (The ion travels on a cyclotron-like orbit).

We report a study of the axialization and laser cooling of single ions and small clouds of ions in a Penning trap. A weak radiofrequency (rf) signal applied to a segmented ring electrode couples the magnetron motion to the cyclotron motion, which results in improved laser cooling of the magnetron motion.
