PEONIES, ANTS AND MORE ... I've always wondered about ants crawling around on my peony buds before they flower. Are the ants necessary, i.e., do they in some way help the flower buds mature? I planted a new peony in my garden, but no ants appeared on my single flower bud the first year, and it didn't open.

Do not try to get rid of the ants on your peonies. This is a natural and temporary activity. It is believed that peonies produce small amounts of nectar and other ant attractants to encourage ants to help in opening the dense double flower buds found in many peonies.

What is it about ants and peony buds? It is believed that peony buds emit a sweet sap that the ants like, it is also believed the the ants help the buds open. You don’t need ants for your peonies to bloom, and peonies will not attract ants to your gardens.
