PEONIES, ANTS AND MORE ... I've always wondered about ants crawling around on my peony buds before they flower. Are the ants necessary, i.e., do they in some way help the flower buds mature? I planted a new peony in my garden, but no ants appeared on my single flower bud the first year, and it didn't open.

Do not try to get rid of the ants on your peonies. This is a natural and temporary activity. It is believed that peonies produce small amounts of nectar and other ant attractants to encourage ants to help in opening the dense double flower buds found in many peonies.

What is it about ants and peony buds? It is believed that peony buds emit a sweet sap that the ants like, it is also believed the the ants help the buds open. You don’t need ants for your peonies to bloom, and peonies will not attract ants to your gardens.

I ran to tell my coworker that the blooms were covered in ants (I was sure she wanted to know right away!) but she was not alarmed or surprised in the least. "Oh yes, ants love Peonies" she dismissed. "So you brought a bunch of flowers into the lab knowing they were infested with ants" I asked?

Q: I have ants congregating on the underside of my sunflower leaves. What in the world are they doing? Also, every year when my peonies bloom they are covered with ants. Do the ants somehow help the peonies? (e-mail reference)
