Dmitri Mendeleev generally is credited with the creation of the first periodic table, which charts the chemical elements by atomic number and valence shell electron configuration.

From the atomic number we know that Li has 3 electrons. From its position on the Periodic Table (and from our discussion above) we know that Li has 1 valence electron: 2 electrons fill Li's 1st shell and 1 orbits in the second shell.

Valence electron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In science, valence electrons are the outermost electrons of an atom, which are important in determining how the atom reacts chemically with other atoms. Atoms with a complete shell of valence elect...

The periodiс table of the chemical elements (also Mendeleev's table , periodic table of the elements or just periodic table ) is a tabular display of the chemical elements. Although precursors...

The column # of the periodic table tells you the number of electrons in the outer ring of the atoms in that column. Outer electrons are called "valence electrons". The last column (#8) holds the inert or noble gasses.

For elements in groups labeled A in the periodic table (IA, IIA, etc.), the number of valence electrons corresponds to the group number. Thus Li, Na, and other elements in group IA have one valence electron.

Covalent bonding occurs by a sharing of valence electrons, ... Because of their differing nuclear charges, and as a result of shielding by inner electron shells, the different atoms of the periodic table have different affinities for nearby electrons. The ability of an element to attract or hold onto electrons is...

The number of valence electrons is just how many electrons an atom has in its outer shell. It's easy to figure out if you've got a periodic table. (See the link to the left of this answer for a good periodic table). ... How many valence electrons do each of the elements in the periodic table have?

For example, Si is a 14 (4A) element so that the electron configuration of the highest energy s and p electrons ns2 np2. Since Si is in the third row of the periodic table, n = 3 so the the electron configuration of the highest energy s and p electrons is 3s2 3p2. There are 4 valence electrons.
