Light = phototropism ... The Darwins used grass seedlings for some of their experiments. When grass seeds germinate, the primary leaf pierces the seed coverings and the soil while protected by the coleoptile, a hollow, cylindrical sheath that surrounds it.

Bottom Light Source; (an experiment in phototropism) ... This experiment was to see the effects of phototropism on plant growth. On the plants that survived, this effect was very noticeable, with the plants growing far to the sides in an effort to reach the light.

The purpose of this experiment is to see if light color affects phototropism and growth of lima bean seedlings. I have read about experiments that show the effect of light on phototropism, and about experiments that use different colored lights to measure plant growth, but I have not seen the two combined.

In this experiment, you will find out whether plants will grow sideways through a maze to reach light. Before you begin, make an educated guess about the outcome of this experiment based on your knowledge of plant growth. ... This educated guess, or prediction, is your hypothesisAn idea in the ... the topic of the experiment...

Originally (with J. v. SACHS, for example) was phototropism called heliotropism, because the plant grows towards the sun. The name was altered when it became clear that plants react also towards artificial sources of light (W. PFEFFER).

Re: HOW DOES PHOTOTROPISM AFFECT PLANTS? Area: Botany ; Posted By: Hurley Shepherd, ... You can do experiments to see this effect. The original experiments used young oat seedlings ( a few days after germination) but you can use other plants. Beans work well also. Try different plants if you have time.

Figure 1. This diagram depicts early experiments with phototropism. Darwin showed that the phototropic response was lost when the tip of the emerging plant was cut off or covered with an opaque cap. Covering the base of the stem did not block phototropic bending.
