Signals about particular elements of the pencil then travel to selected areas of the primary visual cortex, or V1, which curves around a deep fissure at the back of the brain. From there, signals fan out to "higher" areas of cortex that process more global aspects of the pencil such as its shape, color, or motion.

At the optic chiasm the left and right visual worlds are separated. After the chiasm, the fibers are called the optic tract. G. Division of labor in the visual system: Knowledge of all this enables you to test the status of your patient's visual system by shining a light into each eye.

Visual information travels in separate pathways for each half of the visual field. Light entering the eye from the right hemifield hits the left half of the retina, Figure 2.1 shows a diagram of the main feedforward pathway in the visual system of humans (see Wandell 1995 and Kandel et al. 1991 for an overview).

The human visual system can detect and discriminate between an incredibly diverse assortment of stimuli that may be chromatic or achromatic, in motion or not, As noted by Polyak (1957), Galen's contributions to the understanding of human anatomy and physiology under normal and pathological conditions were vast,
