Piezoelectricity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Piezoelectricity is the ability of some materials (notably crystals and certain ceramics, including bone) to generate an electric field or electric potential in response to applied mechanical stress....

The word piezo is Greek for "push". The effect known as piezoelectricity was discovered by brothers Pierre and Jacques Curie when they were 21 and 24 years old in 1880.

In a settup that wasn't expected to work, piezoelectricity was well observed in Rochelle salt crystals. When the crystals were deformed (with the gentle tap of a piece of wood or hammer), short (on the order of 4 miliseconds) relatively hight voltage (maximum 20V peak to peak with 10M input Z to scope).

Piezoelectricity In 1880, Jacques and Pierre Curie discovered an unusual characteristic of certain crystalline minerals: when subjected to a mechanical force, the crystals became electrically polarized. Tension and compression generated voltages of opposite polarity, and in proportion to the applied force.

Piezoelectricity is a coupling between a material's mechanical and electrical behaviors. In the simplest of terms, when a piezoelectric material is squeezed, an electric charge collects on its surface. Conversely, when a piezoelectric material is subjected to a voltage drop, it mechanically deforms.

Piezoelectricity was obscure even among crystallographers; the mathematics required to understand it was complicated; and no publicly visible applications had been found for any of the piezoelectric crystals.
