Pileus caps are made of ice crystals high in the troposphere. They form as a slab of air is shoved upward, in the shape of a dome or cap, just above a rapidly rising convective tower. Moisture in the dome condenses directly into an ice fog as the air rises and cools, forming the pileus.

Weather photography by Bernard Hulshof ... The pileus layer forms when a convective cloud pushes a moist layer of air above it upwards, causing condensation in this layer. Often these pileus clouds are shortlived, as the strongly rising convective cloud will eventually pierce thru the pileus layer.

The lifted air that produces pileus clouds is typically drier than the moist air from lower levels often responsible for cumulus clouds. There is little tendency for any significant vertical growth in pileus clouds, which is why they take on a smoother, horizontal shape.

Pileus clouds can help weather-watchers anticipate thunderstorms, as the clouds that generate pileus formations are those most likely to develop into full-blown cumulonimbus clouds. ... Clouds that are attached to pileus are often given the suffix "pileus" or "with pileus".

Iridescence in Florida pileus clouds. Imaged in July '03 by David LaPuma (site) using a Leica Televid 77 APO spotting scope. The inset shows the area of the main image atop a towering cumulus cloud. Pileus or "mushroom cap" clouds are formed above cumulus.
