I'm really trying hard to put my thoughts about this poem into words. I don't see so muich as a poem but a statement by a woman, a black woman who is seen to be unworthy of being 'helped' into a carriage by a man because of her colour.

And ain't I a woman? Look at me ; Look at my arm! I have plowed and planted and gathered into barns and no man could head me... And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man--- when I could get to it--- and bear the lash as well and ain't I a woman?

And ain't I a woman? Look at me; Look at my arm! I have plowed and planted and gathered into barns and no man could head me... And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man-- when I could ... This is the sort of poem that inspires me to pick up a pen and try to make sense of the chaos in my head.

Compiled with a specific purpose-to redress the omission of women's work in traditional writing collections-Ain't I A Woman! ... My personal favorite is "Witch." There are dozens of poems in here, enough to make the book seem very long, but since no poem is longer than two pages, I garantee you won't get bored.

I have borne thirteen children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother's grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain't I a woman?

Truth's "Aint I a Woman?" speech delivered in 1851 at a women's rights convention in Akron, Ohio was devised to dispute claims made by Protestant ministers suggesting men possessed intellect superior to women and therefore "deserved" greater privileges than women.
