Polar climates tend to be dry because the descending air is cold and lacks significant moisture, precluding the formation of clouds and snowfall. Some polar regions receive less than 10 inches or 250 millimetres of precipitation each year, and can be as dry as the hot deserts of the subtropical climate zone.

Note that on their respective summer solstices, the North and South Poles actually receive more solar radiation than anywhere else in the world, although in today's climate most of the solar radiation reaching the surface in polar regions is reflected back due to the high albedos of snow and ice.
