In 1834 the New Poor Law was enacted which joined together about six Parishes into a Union for the administration of the measures to deal with the poor under the national leadership of the Poor Law Commissioners.

The Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 was the classic example of the Whig and Utilitarian reforming legislation of the period 1831-41. It was framed after the production of the report of a Royal Commission and received general parliamentary support.
