But the pop stars of the 19th century were Italian opera singers. In fact, the the Italian "bel canto" style would remain the dominant style of singing in American pop music. Most of the sheet music sold in the 19th century was opera, followed by minstrel shows.

Just as popular music is difficult to define, its history is hard to delineate. Many pop music historians begin around 1950, with the emergence of rock 'n' roll, but it is worth looking at the influences of jazz, blues, swing and country and western in the years prior to that.
