I put it all back together, and started it up today (first pull!) and went to start power raking my yard. It seemed to be running slow (though I have never heard it run before) and it was bogging down a bit. The grass wasn't overly long or heavily thatched.

Before raking, determine the amount of thatch present by slicing down with a spade and examining the cross section. ... need not be done annually -- every third or fourth year will suffice. A word of caution. Power raking should only be carried out on healthy, solid turf.

There are some fairly large patches so the yard resembles a patch-work quilt. Would a severe power raking allow for the introduction of bluegrass or fescue? Currently the buffalograss is just starting to show signs of growth.

PRIOR TO PERFORMING THE ACTUAL DETHATCHING OPERATION, MOW THE YARD AND BAG ; THE CLIPPINGS AT LEAST TWICE. THEN POWER RAKE. AFTER POWER RAKING, THE YARD WILL NEED TO BE VACUUMED TO REMOVE THE OFFENDING RESIDUE. WHEN FINISHED, UP TO 75% OF THE VEGETATION WILL BE REMOVED.
