Many prairie plants are adapted for a dry, windy, hot climate. Leaves of prairie plants tend to be long and narrow to prevent overheating. Some plants have divided leaves or broad leaves held stiffly upright, to expose less surface to the sun. Fleshy, hairy leaves and sticky sap help hold in moisture.

Tall grass prairie. The easternmost section of the North American grasslands, the tall grass prairie extends into regions of humid climate, both continental and subtropical (Dfa and Cfa). Carl Sauer's contention that these humid grasslands represent a fire or fire and grazing subclimax is generally accepted today.

Prairie is the word we use in North America for the large expanse of grassland in the middle of the continent. It is a word that came into our language from the French trappers and traders that were among the first European people to see this land of broad horizons ... They must also be able to tolerate the climate.
