Hunted by sealers for their blubber, bones, fur, and oil, the elephant seal population was reduced nearly to the point of extinction during the 19th century.

The elephant seal's two most common predators are the killer whale and the great white shark. Both predators are efficient carnivores, able to rip into the fatty body of elephant seals with their sharp teeth. Sharks immobilize prey by decapitation or biting off the hind flippers.

Fishin' for Facts: Elephant Seals Northern elephant seals are found in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. Southern elephant seal are found in the oceans around Antarctica. Northern elephant seals eat squid, octopus, fish and sometimes even small sharks. Southern elephant seals have a similar diet.

With the exception of breeding season, elephant seals come ashore only to shed their skin, a process known as molting. In late summer, hundreds of seal gather on beaches and wallow in muddy pools of water. They lie close to gather while they gradually shed patches of hair and skin.
