Today, there are many active volcanoes worldwide. Is there anything we can do to predict how and when they will erupt? ... As the world's population grows, more and more people are living in potentially dangerous volcanic areas. Volcanic eruptions continue--as they have throughout most of geologic time-

Scientists are trying to predict volcano eruptions. When volcanoes erupt the scientists don’t predict correctly so they can’t evacuate the area. But past eruptions are helping us predict more accurately. If the scientists predict correctly they can save many lives that may be in danger.

Volcanologists use many instruments to predict eruptions: ... The satellite uses infared sensors to detect temperatures and changes in volcanoes. Aircraft monitors the amount of gas released from the ground. An increase in sulfur dioxide and other gases usually means that there could be volcanic eruptions.

Earthquakes can set off volcanoes by shaking up molten rock like champagne in a bottle until they explode, a study suggests. The research shows that volcanoes erupt up to four times more often after a large earthquake than they would without the seismic agitation.
