RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: This study examined variations in the diagnosis of depressive disorders and prescription of antidepressant medications in visits to a representative sample of the US office-based primary care physicians.

We found high rates of antidepressant prescribing in primary care and high rates of long-term prescribing. Our data underestimate prescription rates for adults because the denominator includes children, who are rarely prescribed antidepressants.
