The decision to remove a privet hedge is a difficult one. After all, privet does a lot of nice things for us. It gives us privacy from our neighbors, cuts down on noise pollution from the street, and cools our houses in summer by reducing wind and transpiration of groundwater through its leaves.

If you have inherited a privet hedge or you had one growing prior to the privet being registered as a noxious weed the responsible action to take would be to ensure that they are pruned prior to setting seed.

In terms of the environment, privet is already in the environment because it's been spread by native birds that eat the fruit, so growing it in your garden is unlikely to make things worse. Nonetheless if you grow privet as a trimmed hedge make sure you trim off the flowers and fruit.

Question: I planted a privet hedge about 4 years ago along the top of a berm. It has grown very well. I trim it down each spring. However, it is now about 4 feet tall but not bushing out at the bottom. How can I get it to fill in at the bottom?
