Excitation-contraction coupling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Excitation-contraction (EC) coupling is a term coined in 1952 to describe the physiological process of converting an electrical stimulus to mechanical response . This process is fundamental to muscle ...

Excitation-contraction coupling (ECC) is the process whereby an action potential triggers a myocyte to contract. When a myocyte is depolarized by an action potential, calcium ions enter the cell during phase 2 of the action potential through L-type calcium channels located on the sarcolemma.

(b) The inactivation process of Na+ current was significantly delayed with no change of its amplitude; (c) The overall intracellular Na+ and Ca2+ concentration could be augmented in the presence of BmK I; (p <0.05);

We have tested the hypothesis that caveolae modulate excitation-contraction coupling (ECC) and beta-adrenergic stimulation in the adult cardiac myocyte. METHODS: Shortening, [Ca(2+)](i) and L-type Ca(2+) current (I(Ca,L)) were recorded in rat ventricular myocytes.

process of converting an electrical stimulus to mechanical response [1] . This process is fundamental to muscle physiology, whereby the electrical stimulus is usually an action potential and the mechanical response is contraction. EC coupli...

Excitation Contraction Coupling I. Turning the idea of movement into muscle contractions A. The train of physiological events that run from the moment the brain decides to initiate a muscle contraction to the actual contraction are termed Excitation Contraction Coupling (EC Coupling).

The T-tubules are essential structures for excitation-contraction coupling. T-tubules are tube-shaped invaginations of the sarcolemma (skeletal muscle plasma membrane) that penetrate throughout the muscle fiber (red in Figure 16-73A).

It is crucial to the very process that enables the chambers of the heart to contract and relax, a process called excitation-contraction coupling.

Conclusions: Caveolae modulate ECC via the efficiency of the Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release process, rather than Ca2+ influx. Our data are also consistent with the hypothesis that interaction of Gi protein cascade components with caveolin in the caveolae is necessary for effective signalling by this pathway.
