In fact there is such a thing as the ‘Maori police” The new Zealand flax is so sacred that in one botanical garden which I visited “Maori police” would check on these plants to make sure they had not been pruned incorrectly and often they would supervise the pruning on designated days.

One thing lead to another - the pruning of two neglected Sally Holmes roses, the digging out of an old Toe ... This business of removing flaxes - it may seem harsh, even silly, to non-flax growers. Because flaxes are so plentiful (and cheap) New Zealand gardeners can afford to have a shape-up or ship-out attitude to them.
