This is a small group with only two genera, Psilotum, shown above left, and Tmesipteris, above right, neither with many species. Both genera grow in tropical or subtropical regions, where they occur on rich soil or as epiphytes.

Psilotum nudum is an epiphyte that sometimes grows as a terrestial plant in rocky crevices in sandy soils. It is considered a fern ally because it is a spore-producing vascular plant. Whisk fern is native to swamplands and dry rocky cliffs from North Carolina to Oklahoma to the tropics.

While Psilotum looks like an early land plant, studies of its sexual life cycle, particularly the gametophyte stage, suggest that it is actually closely related to ferns! It seems probable that Psilotum is a fern that has lost most of the complex features such as leaves and roots.
