The cabin with a puncheon floor was thought to be quite well finished; for all early structures were unprovided with slab floors. The dirt for floor-surfacing was well tramped -- dampened if necessary -- and beaten with a maul until smooth and solid.

The cabin had a puncheon floor, which are logs split in half, laid close together, split side-up. This made for a warm floor, fitting snugly to the sides and end of the building. There were no mop boards to give a smooth finish.
