Punnett square is a chart used by geneticists to show all possible allelic combinations of gametes in a cross of parents with known genotypes. Predicted offspring genotype frequencies can be calculated by tallying the allelic combinations in the P-square.

One of the easiest ways to calculate the mathematical probability of inheriting a specific trait was invented by an early 20th century English geneticist named Reginald Punnett . His technique employs what we now call a Punnett square.

A Punnett square is a chart which shows/predicts all possible gene combinations in a cross of parents (whose genes are known). Punnett squares are named for an English geneticist, Reginald Punnett. He discovered some basic principles of genetics, including sex linkage and sex determination.

Draw the Punnett square that illustrates this marriage. What is the man’s genotype? What are the genotypes of the children? ... deaf? How could you tell the genotype of this male dog? Also, using Punnett square(s), show how two hearing dogs could produce deaf offspring.

Using the Punnett Square to figure out heredity of genetic traits. ... The standard way of working out what the possible offspring of two parents will be is the Punnett Square. Consider a single gene. Since each individual has one pair of each chromosome, they have two copies of each gene (one on each chromosome).
