Double clutching is a shifting technique that would be required to match the engine speed with the speed of the input shaft in older gearboxes. Modern syncromesh gearboxes do not need this as this is accomplished automatically (first syncom...

I fully agree with points 1 & 2, but many people still use double-clutching (or double-declutching as some people refer to it) for racing or even just to increase the life of their tranny/synchros. The purpose of double-clutching is to match the engine revs to the driveline speed in a downshift.

if you understand the basics of a convential manual transmission you will understand double clutching has absolutely NO PURPOSE AT ALL. double clutching IS in-fact necessary on very stout trannys on tractors or heavy duty machinery without syncronizers that you would see in a construction yard.

[Archive] Double clutching Drivetrain ... Double clutching is where you press the clutch petal to take out of gear release the clutch pedal, press it again to put it in the new gear. Its purpose is to match the revs of the gear used to change gear with the gear providing the drive to allow them to mesh.

Heel-Toe Downshifting: Braking + Double-Clutching ... Heel toe downshifting is a variation of double clutching, but is performed while the car needs to slow down quickly (as in the approach of a sharp corner). More precisely, heel-toe downshifting is double clutching, except that you are braking at the same time!

i was wondering what the purpose of double clutching is. is it just to make downshifting smoother?, because it doesnt seem like it would be faster and there was some racing video that showed peoples feet and some double clutched and some didnt and it doesnt seem like it would be very good to double clutch during a race.

The whole purpose of double clutching is to bring the speed of the input shaft side of the transmission up, so that it more closely matches the speed of the output shaft. Next time you're in your car, try doing a downshift without double clutching, and then try it with double clutching.

Manual transmissions in modern passenger cars use synchronizers to eliminate the need for double-clutching. A synchro's purpose is to allow the collar and the gear to make frictional contact before the dog teeth make contact.

[Archive] Double Clutching vs. Engine Braking General E46 Forum ... E46Fanatics > E46 BMW > General E46 Forum > Double Clutching vs. Engine Braking ... I think the biggest purpose of heel-toe'ing in racing conditions is to maintain the engine rpm's in the powerband while entering and exiting a turn.
