The diagnostic performance of the commercial quantitative buffy coat capillary tube technique was compared with the standard diagnosis of filariasis by microscopical examination of Giemsa stained thick blood films. The QBC test was highly sensitive than the thick blood film in detection of microfilaraemic patients.

11.3.3 QBC (Quantitative Buffy Coat) ... In view of the simplicity of the test, this technique should in future be of benefit to frequent travellers in isolated tropical regions. It should be noted that these tests do not produce any quantitative information (including no parasitaemia).

The results obtained were compared with the current diagnostic methods - peripheral blood smear (PBS) and quantitative buffy coat (QBC). Blood samples collected from 100 suspected malaria patients were subjected to all three tests. ... The cost of PBS was Rs. 5 per test, that of QBC was Rs. 70 per test, while that of MCBS...

We have developed a system for the quantitative analysis of the buffy coat in centrifuged whole blood samples. This analysis, performed in a modified microhematocrit tube, provides a hematocrit value, total WBC count, platelet count, and a separation of the leukocyte population ... Quantitative buffy coat CMV-PCR levels did not correlate with detection of CMV inclusions in renal tissue. Paradoxically, quantitative buffy coat CMV-PCR was low (239 and 538 copies/µg of ... For example, the sensitivity of CMV-PCR is very high, raising the possibility that a positive test may not signal active disease.
