For a veggie version, I make a 'shepherds pie' with lentils. I saute onions and garlic in butter, add flour to make a roux, and then vegetable broth. When the broth thickens a bit, I add cooked lentils, corn, ... Bake til cheese melts and pie is heated through. This was something quick and easy to make for a pre-teen.
