RR Lyrae variable - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RR Lyrae variables are periodic variable stars, commonly found in globular clusters, and often used as standard candles to measure galactic distances. This type of variable is named after the prototy...

RR Lyrae variables, however, are older, less massive, and fainter (with luminosities typical around 45 Lsun) than Cepheids. Two subgroups are recognized: RRAB, which pulsate in the fundamental mode, and RRC, which pulsate in the first overtone.

RR Lyrae is the prototype of a class of variables (that is, the ‘main’ star in that category, usually the first star discovered with its particular characteristics). RR Lyrae variables are very old giants which pulsate (that is their outer layer expands and contracts).

Summary The student finds the distance to the globular cluster, Messier 4 (M4), using observations of an RR Lyrae star and the mean absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae variables. Background and Theory; As stars evolve, their atmospheres become unstable and the star becomes intrinsically variable.
