Connecting a multidrop 485 network. The EIA RS-485 Specification labels the data wires "A" and "B", but many manufacturers label their wires "+" and "-". In our experience, the "-" wire should be connected to the "A" line, and the "+" wire to the "B" line.

The modbus interface. Tutorial about the modbus specification and use. ASCII and RTU communication covered. ... The original Modbus interface ran on RS-232, but most later Modbus implementations used RS-485 because it allowed longer distances, higher speeds and the possibility of a true multi-drop network.

I'm trying to find out the limitations of RS-485. I need to get a hold of the spec or some equivilent source to find out the distance (ie 1000ft.) that a given data rate (ie 1MHz)can travel on a given wire gauge (ie 26awg).

The RS-422 specification recommends 24AWG twisted pair cable with a shunt capacitance of 16 pF per foot and 100 ohm characteristic impedance. While the RS-485 specification does not specify cabling, these recommendations should be used for RS-485 systems as well.
