In 2001, Affirmed contracted laminitis, a fatal hoof disease, and was euthanized. He was given the highest honor that a racehorse can receive, he was buried whole, wearing the colors of his original owners, and leaving the world with precious memories and the reminder of his spectacular life, through his children.

As a racehorse, Affirmed Success made quite a name for himself. He ran in four Breeder's Cup races, and has been a Graded Stakes Winner at the ages of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Like many great racehorses, he has been jockeyed by the best including Jerry Bailey, Jorge Chavez and Edgar Prado.
