The five-bastioned trace design of Fort McHenry, built between 1794 and 1803, is based upon a French design that dates from the reign of Louis XIV (1643-1715). The V-shaped outwork opposite the fort entrance is a ravelin strategically designed and placed to protect the entrance from direct attack.

Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine; ... The Ravelin (second photo) stands in front of the sally port. This wedge-shaped outwork protected the entrance from enemy fire, and helped to control access to the star fort. The original ravelin was built in 1813, and was modified to its present dimensions in 1837.

A typical five sided fort of the era, McHenry has diamond shaped bastions at each corner to provide fire along the curtain walls and the faces of the neighboring bastions. The prominent ravelin on the left of the picture was designed to help protect the entrance.

Here is the front entrance to Fort McHenry. To the left, out of frame, is the ravelin, which protected the front gate so troops could move out into battle safely. It also stored ammunition, and provided a base to catch any attackers in the defenders' crossfire.
