The reason for leap year is of course to keep the solar year in time with the sidereal day- which is another way of saying that the time it takes for the earth to rotate on its axis (a day) does not divide evenly into the time it takes for the earth to revolve around the sun (a year).

The reason for this is that the seasons, ... The change from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian involved the change of the simple rule for leap-years to the more complex one in which century years should only be leap-years if they were divisible by 400. For example, 1700, 1800 and 1900 are not leap-years whereas 2000 was.

The reason we have leap years in the first place is that the astronomical "tropical year," which determines the seasons, is not exactly 365 days long, but closer to 365.25. So to stay in tune with the seasons, we have to add a leap day every four years.

2000 was a leap year, as you know. But 1900 was not, nor 1800, nor 1700... Give them a try above. Do you know the reason? Can you also explain why the "Leap Year Engine" above will provide no result for years preceding 1582?
