Flags are normally flown at full-mast. This means that they fly right at the top of the flagstaff. Sometimes, they are flown at half-mast. They are flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning. That is a perfectly good answer to why we fly them at half-mast, but it doesn't explain the reasons behind it.

Vanity question: today I was in the area of Union Station (Washington, DC) and noticed that all of the American and state flags around there were being flown at half-staff. A few blocks away I saw the same thing at ... I just googled why I saw flags here in Ca at half mast today and found this FR post from last month.
