Regional metamorphism is metamorphism that occurs over broad areas of the crust. Most regionally metamorphosed rocks occur in areas that have undergone deformation during an orogenic event resulting in mountain belts that have since been eroded to expose the metamorphic rocks.

Regional Metamorphism; Regional metamorphism occurs over large areas and generally does not show any relationship to igneous bodies. Most regional metamorphism is accompanied by deformation under non-hydrostatic or differential stress conditions.

Metamorphism is the solid-state recrystallization of pre-existing rocks due to changes in physical and chemical conditions, primarily heat, pressure, and the introduction of chemically active fluids....

Mountain systems typically contain large belts of regionally metamorphosed rock. These are often foliated metamorphic rocks developed under medium to high temperatures. They occur in belts of regional extent, from which the term regional metamorphism was originally derived.

Circulating fluids are unimportant due to the great depth of regional metamorphism. Pressure seals pore space in the rocks and fluids can't circulate. A variation on regional metamorphism is burial metamorphism, the latter occurs solely in response to burial.

The ‘classical’ model for regional metamorphism presupposes elevated temperatures and pressures due to deep burial and deformation/tectonic forces over large areas over millions of years—an apparently insurmountable problem for the creationist framework. ... Regional metamorphism is almost invariably accompanied by penetrative deformation, giving rise to folding and the development of pervasive fabrics: cleavage at very low grades where the aligned phyllosilicate grains are too small to be individually visible;
