Dear Home Inspector: Our home inspector recommended replacing the knob and tube wiring in our home. But my father-in-law says there's nothing wrong with leaving it alone. What is your opinion of this type of wiring?

I'm slowly replacing all of the knob and tube in my house. The floor outlets in the old part of the house are all on shiny new Romex now. The master bedroom has its own circuit breakers and new wiring as well. Ditto for the new furnace and that bathroom.

This is a photo of some knob and tube wiring in an Attic in La Mesa. My opinion is any and all knob and tube wiring should be removed and replaced with modern “Romex” type wire. Replacing knob and tube wiring requires some plaster damage and can be an extensive job, but it is worth it.

Knob & tube wiring was used in most residential construction until the early 1950's. This wiring gets its name from the ceramic knobs to which the wires are secured and the ceramic tubes in which the wires pass through the wood framing.
