Sheet erosion occurs as runoff travels over the ground, picking up and transporting the particles dislodged by raindrop impacts. The process of sheet erosion is uniform, gradual and difficult to detect until it develops into rill erosion.

Erosion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Erosion is the removal of solids (sediment, soil, rock and other particles) in the natural environment. It usually occurs due to transport by wind, water, or ice; by down-slope creep of soil and othe...

Figure WN.16 NRCS personnel inspecting rill erosion on a field (Image courtesy NRCS) ... Rill erosion is caused by water concentrating into innumerable, closely-spaced small channels. Left unchecked, rills can cut vertically and horizontally and when joined, for gullies.

In order to abate water erosion of the soil or control pollution of waters of the state by soil sediment from sheet and rill erosion in agricultural production or silvicultural operations, the owner, operator or person responsible for agricultural pollution shall apply and maintain conservation practices such that...

It is difficult to obtain information on variations in the relative importance of sheet and rill erosion during an event using traditional monitoring techniques.

Mineralogy and Water Quality Parameters in Rill Erosion of Clay–Sand Mixtures ... RILL ERODIBILITY VALUES are input requirements for process-based erosion models such as WEPP (Water Erosion Prediction Project). Direct measurement of these values for many areas either in the field or in the laboratory is not possible...

thus, different depths of erosion produce suspended sediment with unique radionuclide signatures. Those signatures can be used to estimate the depth and areal extent of sheet and rill erosion. We developed a model to execute multiple mass balances on soil and radionuclides to quantify these erosion mechanisms.

The rill data for both sites lies in the region predicted to be dominated by diffusive erosion. The occurrence of rills in this region indicates that wildfire is affecting the location of the rills by disrupting the hydrology of the hillslope.
