The forested land along rivers, streams, and lakes is known as the "riparian zone". Riparian comes from the Latin word ripa, which means bank. Riparian zones are areas of transition between aquatic and upland ecosystems, and they offer numerous, yet often overlooked, benefits to wildlife and people.

Riparian flora and fauna are often distinctly different from those found in adjacent communities because of the water-rich soils found in the riparian zone. Healthy riparian zones provide a variety of important ecosystem services and they are often important habitats for wildlife.

The riparian zone herbaceous plants should have adequate soil moisture available for regrowth when grazed at this time whereas uplands may not. Where riparian zones are narrow and fencing into a specialized pasture is impractical, late summer use may be detrimental.
