During Robert A. Millikan's lifetime the number of physicists in the United States doubled about every ten years, and the laboratory space and research funds at their disposal grew even faster. Millikan benefited from this trend and worked vigorously to accelerate it.

Robert Millikan (1868-1953) was born in Morrison, Illinois in the U.S.A on the 22 of March 1868. After he graduated at Maquoketa High School he taught elementary physics for two years. He was appointed Fellow in Physics after receiving his mastership.

In 1923 Robert Millikan received a Nobel prize. He was comitted to scientific activity until as late as 1945, investigating cosmic rays and atomic structure. At the age of 77 he withdrew from scientific activity. He died on 19th December 1953.

Robert Andrews Millikan was born on the 22nd of March, 1868, in Morrison, Ill. (U.S.A.), as the second son of the Reverend Silas Franklin Millikan and Mary Jane Andrews. His grandparents were of the Old New England stock which had come to America before 1750, and were pioneer settlers in the Middle West.
