All rocket engines produce thrust by accelerating a working fluid. But there are many different ways to produce the acceleration, and many different available working fluids. Let's look at some of the various types of rocket engines and how they produce thrust.

The amount of thrust produced by the rocket depends on the mass flow rate through the engine, the exit velocity of the exhaust, and the pressure at the nozzle exit. All of these variables depend on the design of the nozzle.

Rocket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A rocket or rocket vehicle is a missile, spacecraft, aircraft or other vehicle which obtains thrust by the reaction of the rocket to the ejection of fast moving fluid exhaust from a rocket engine....
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocket
Rocket thrust results from the high speed ejection of material and does not require any medium to "push against". Conservation of momentum dictates that if material is ejected backward, the forward momentum of the remaining rocket must increase since an isolated system cannot change its net momentum.
