Make short cuttings, 2 to 3 inches long. Remove flower buds and excess foliage. Long cuttings can often be cut into several sections. Azaleas root very easily during the winter months. Take a look at the special page on Dormant Dip the end of each cutting in a rooting hormone such as Rootone or Dip 'N Grow.

Note: Azaleas and rhododendrons can be raised from seed, too. The same basic approach is used, but no rooting hormone is needed. The seed is very small and should be sown directly on top of the medium. Germination will usually occur in just a few weeks, and plants will be ready for transplanting in a month or so.

Cuttings of deciduous azaleas are more difficult to root. The first problem is rooting them at all, and the second problem is getting them to break into new growth after they have grown some roots. The general procedure is the same as for evergreen azaleas.

Generally, most evergreen azaleas are easy to propagate. The problem is that not all species can be propagated using the same method. Each of the several methods of propagation have advantages and disadvantages. Azaleas are propagated from seeds, stem cuttings, Rooting will normally occur in 4 to 6 weeks.

Deciduous azaleas are propagated commercially by seed. Evergreen azaleas and rhododendrons root quickly (6 to 8 weeks) from softwood or semi-hardwood tip cuttings. Cuttings may be made at any time, but June to July cuttings seem most ideal for rooting azaleas, and August to September cuttings seem best for rhododendrons.

Our purpose is to encourage interest in and to disseminate knowledge about rhododendrons and azaleas. These written instructions are directed primarily toward those members who have not tried their hand at rooting cuttings and who have only limited facilities.

Dip the end of each cutting in a rooting hormone such as Dip 'N Grow or Rootone. Shake off excess. Keep deciduous azaleas growing under lights until the new growth starts. Otherwise they often will never break dormancy and die the next year.
