Most people use the Common cubit (450mm) for describing the ark, but by my research, the ark should be measured by the Royal cubit (520mm). Most references to cubits in the Bible appear to mean Royal Cubits. Some have proposed pine trees were used as the gopher wood and pine resin for the pitch.

The principal unit of measurement in ancient Egypt was the royal cubit, a length we know to have been 52.4 cm, approximating the length of a man's forearm. The royal cubit comprised seven palm widths each of four digits of thumb width, so that it could be divided into a total of 28 digits.
