When a C atom is attached to 2 groups and so is involved in 2 s bonds, it requires 2 orbitals in the hybrid set. This requires that it is sp hybridised. The general "steps" are similar to that for seen previously sp3 and sp2 hybridization.

The phenomenon of mixing up of different orbitals of same energy level of an atom to produce equal number of hybrid-orbitals of same energy and identical properties is known as hybridization. A hybrid orbital contains maximum two electrons with opposite spin.

The process of hybridization in which one s-orbital and one p-orbital overlap to produce two hybrid orbital is known as Sp- HYBRIDIZATION. This type of hybridization is also called diagonal hybridization. These orbital are at an angle of 180o.

This involves the mixing of one s- and one p-orbital forming two sp-hybrid orbitals. The two sp-hybrid orbitals are oriented in a linear arrangement and bond angle is 180°. For e.g., BeF2 involves sp-hybridization and is, therefore, linear.

sp HYBRIDIZATION; This involves making linear combination of s and p atomic orbital to form molecular orbitals that are directed along certain directions. This leads to the so called covalent bonding.
